About Mel At Night

Have you ever stayed up late browsing the web when everyone else was asleep and suddenly heard a creaking sound under the floorboards? Will Mel At Night immerse you in the fear of the dark or the feeling of someone watching you from your window at night?

Welcome to Mel At Night. If FNAF (Five Nights at Freddy's) is the fear of working night shifts, then Mel At Night is the fear right in your own home—the place that should be safest.

What is Mel At Night?

This is a short indie horror game using adorable (but optically deceptive) pixel art graphics.

  • Main character: Mel—a young woman who habitually stays up late.
  • Setting: A small, cozy apartment with a computer, a bed, and... uninvited guests.
  • Style: The game doesn't rely heavily on jump scares but focuses on building escalating tension.

Gameplay: The "Unstable Routine"

The gameplay is simple, revolving around performing daily activities before bedtime:

  • Interaction: You control Mel as she moves around the house, checks the computer, drinks water, and turns off the lights.
  • Change: Initially, everything is normal. But after each action you take (like going to the bathroom or getting food), the house changes slightly. A door opens by itself? A shadow glides by?
  • Decision: Will you choose to ignore it or investigate?
  • Similarities: This feeling of doubt about reality is very similar to Fatal Survey. You don't know what's real and what's just your imagination because you're so exhausted.

Why is Mel At Night scary?

The game's horror comes from the Uncanny Valley effect in a realistic setting.

  • Sound: The clicking of keyboards, footsteps, the whistling wind... Everything is rendered in outstanding detail.
  • Loneliness: Unlike Six Cats Under—where the house is filled with adorable cat ghosts protecting you—in Mel At Night, loneliness is your greatest enemy. You are alone facing the darkness.

Tips for sleeping well in Mel At Night

  • Inspect carefully: Don't just glance around. Inspect windows and under the bed. Sometimes clues are in the most unexpected places.
  • Read notes: Text messages on the computer or notes in the house will reveal the hidden plot.
  • Prepare yourself: The game has multiple endings. You can either go to sleep safely, or you may experience something terrible.

Play and help Mel sleep well now!

Mel At Night is a brief but impactful experience. It reminds us why we often cover our heads with blankets when we sleep. After spending a long, nightmarish night with Mel, if you want to find a sense of security (or at least be able to wield a weapon for self-defense instead of running away), try your hand at Magic Cat Academy to use magic to exorcise ghosts.
